There is a magnetic allure to Bali—a mystical pulse that transcends its breathtaking landscapes and rich, ceremonial culture, like a pull coming straight from the island’s soul. Often called the “Island of the Gods,” Bali is a place where spirituality is woven into the rhythm of daily life. It’s an island of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet the modern world, and where people aim to live according to the Balinese Tri Hita Karana philosophy; in harmony with spirit, nature and each other.
Offerings are laid at shrines before dawn, dancers perform stories of gods and legends, and stunning sunsets cast a warm glow over rice terraces that cascade down mountainsides against volcanic backdrops. Bali’s beauty is not simply in its landscapes; it is in the essence of its people and the sense of sacredness they nurture in every corner of their homeland.
This photobook, Bali: Island of Gods, reveals that essence like few others can. Through the lens of French photographer Stephane Sensey, we are invited into an intimate and authentic Bali that often remains unseen. Over two decades of living on the island have given Stephane an unparalleled connection to its people and places, which is evident on every page. His images do not merely document Bali—they uncover it.
Stephane’s journey with photography began humbly but passionately. Growing up in the coastal town of Biarritz in the south of France, he first picked up a camera in his student years in Spain. During his time in college in California, he took his first formal photography class. Initially, photography was a hobby, a creative outlet—but fate had other plans. Stephane soon found himself creating a book on his hometown in France, a project that transformed photography from a pastime into a true calling. With that shift came the realization that it was not just about capturing images but about capturing the heart of a place or person, translating their essence into light and shadow. Stephane: “I use the camera like a brush to paint light and composition, creating imagery that draws emotion from the viewer.”
In 2004, Stephane relocated to Bali, where his relationship with photography deepened alongside his connection to the island. Through Bali: Island of Gods, he invites us to rediscover Bali’s enduring soul.
In the pages that follow, you’ll find more than picturesque landscapes or charming portraits; you’ll find moments of life lived with a deep-rooted sense of the sacred. Each photograph speaks to the sanctity of Bali, reflected in centuries-old traditions and the knowing smiles of its people. Stephane’s images aren’t just windows into Bali; they are mirrors of its soul, laying bare a truth that only a deeply attuned observer could capture.
Through Stephane’s eye, the island becomes a living canvas, filled with colors, light, and a sense of wonder that reminds us of Bali’s special place in the world. Yet, his work is not only a celebration; it is also a call to action:
Over two decades, Stephane has witnessed the island’s growing challenges. Tourism, which sustains 80% of Bali’s economy, has surged to unprecedented levels, overwhelming the island’s delicate ecosystems and infrastructure. Even worse, sacred rice fields, forests, and cultural landmarks are being sacrificed to unchecked development and urban sprawl. Bali is at a tipping point and it is critical to adopt a model of conscious tourism, says Stephane: “Perhaps inspired by countries like Bhutan, where measures are taken to protect both nature and culture against the consequences of overtourism.”
Through Stephane Sensey’s lens, we see that the spirit of the Island of Gods still endures today. But conscious policies, community-led efforts, and sustainable practices are urgently needed. For without it, the island risks losing what makes it so special. Stephane: “Bali is a jewel that needs to be urgently preserved if we want the next generation to experience the magical culture of this sacred island.”
